About Writing your Life Story

You’ve been telling stories your entire life. There were family stories about Aunt Kate and Cousin James. There were humorous stories about incidents at work and embarrassing moments. There were stories about interesting places you visited, interesting things you did, and all the things you accomplished.  And there were stories about hard times. Stories about how you coped, then survived, and then thrived. Below are two roadmaps to enable you to remember and write these important stories.

Two Roadmaps for Your Life Story Project
The Theme Roadmap

Using this approach to life story writing, you write one two-page story about each of  nine themes that cover the most significant aspects of life and living such as Turning Points, Childhood Family Influences, and Work Life. Each theme presents a series of questions to rekindle memories and focus your story.  When you've finished writing the themes, add photos and you've created your life story book.
The Master List of Essential Stories Roadmap

In this approach, you create a Story List. From this list, you  identify ten to twenty stories related to the important turning points in your life and other significant experiences. This yields a manageable list of  essential stories that define your life journey for your life story book. The remaining stories are sorted into two lists: Fun Facts, Interesting Incidents, and Humorous Anecdotes to include in a chapter of your book of essential stories and a Story Wish List for later projects.
Whether you choose the Theme Roadmap or the Essential Stories Roadmap:

You work with me one-to-one. This enables me to tailor the life story writing project to your specific needs.

You receive articles and videos about writing techniques that engage readers and yield meaningful stories about where you've been, what you've done and what you've learned in the process.

You assemble your stories with related photos to create your life story book.

You can choose a Do-It-Yourself Theme Roadmap which will give you access to the articles and videos about writing techniques and the nine theme
s.
Benefits of Guided Autobiography

Guided Autobiography was developed by Gerontologist James Birren, Ph.D. at the University of Southern California. Today his work continues through the Birren Center for Autobiographical Studies which trains instructors worldwide. Research indicates that Guided Autobiography group members gain deeper understanding of themselves and the meaning of their life journey.

How We Work together to Write your Life Story

During online Individual meetings :

We'll talk about your goals for writing your life story.

You'll choose a story from your essential list or a theme with a series of questions to help you get started on a two-page story.

We'll discuss each of your completed stories as it relates to achieving your life story project goals.

I'll provide writing craft instruction that will enable you to write stories that engage readers.

Since meetings will be individual, we can meet once a week, once every two weeks, or once a month depending on your schedule.

I would like to talk with you about your Life Story Project and answer all your questions.
